Catalogue Note:
Draft of Siren(s) is a study for siren bay set constructed inside Seductive Exacting Realism at the Renaissance Society in Chicago in 2015. Nine women were photographed lounging over a period of 8 hours on the beach rocks of Ro and Megisti islands in Greece, rumored to be in proximity to the original siren island in Homer’s Odyssey. The pose study was used to create nine figures (sirens) cast by Rootstein Mannequins to occupy the eaves of Irena Haiduk’s work at the Renaissance Society and documenta 14 in Kassel, Germany. The bay was constructed strictly for the purpose of making photographic images titled Proof Of Sirens (2017).

The draft is mounted on marble, a material which signified the copy, or the secondary, for ancient Greeks. Behind the photograph there is an inscription in the marble. There are, then, two works: the original or the sketch, and the frame itself which is inscribed with title, and date.

The image of the sirens re-purposes documentation into a sculptural wall mounted artwork. The collector may remove the photograph and show the marble backing only since the image slides out.

Draft of Sirens contains 6 images (studies). Each work is an edition of one.

Irena Haiduk directs Yugoexport, an oral corporation whose founding logic is equivalence, loyalty, and familial solidarity between people and things. Initiated as a copy of the former Yugoslav apparel and weapons manufacturer Jugoeksport, Yugoexport is formally incorporated in the United States (where corporations are people), launched in Paris and headquartered in New York, Yugoexport transacts slowly, at the pace of their own economy. Their maxim, How To Surround Your Self With Things In The Right Way, is the core principle powering the production of images, books, apparel, orations, films, scenographies, and variable spaces, all designed to nourish the organ of imagination. Yugoexport and Irena Haiduk often collaborate with art institutions including: the Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago (2015), Whitney Museum of American Art (2017), documenta 14 (2017), Swiss Institute (2020), Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen and Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (2022), among others.
