Catalogue Note:
Spliced, waxed, ditone inkjet print of a 3d rendering drafted by Irena Haiduk and Nam Huynh. Mounted on aluminium with hanging hardware, 70x100 cm. Oval archival inkjet print of a 3d rendering modeled by Irena Haiduk and Nam Huynh. The instrument depicted, gusle, traditionally has a bow in the shape of a serpent. The snake sleeps unless the singer is in imminent danger. The serpent wakes to defend the singer, from those who wish them ill or intend to break the instrument. During the Ottoman occupation of the Balkans, playing gusle was punished by blinding since the songs preserved local histories and rallied resistance. The scene within the image is lit by Irena Haiduk’s work By Candlelight (oval candelabra).

Edition of 1. It should be installed in a corner with Helios reflecting daylight on the print. Indirect light only.

Irena Haiduk directs Yugoexport, an oral corporation whose founding logic is equivalence, loyalty, and familial solidarity between people and things. Initiated as a copy of the former Yugoslav apparel and weapons manufacturer Jugoeksport, Yugoexport is formally incorporated in the United States (where corporations are people), launched in Paris and headquartered in New York, Yugoexport transacts slowly, at the pace of their own economy. Their maxim, How To Surround Your Self With Things In The Right Way, is the core principle powering the production of images, books, apparel, orations, films, scenographies, and variable spaces, all designed to nourish the organ of imagination. Yugoexport and Irena Haiduk often collaborate with art institutions including: the Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago (2015), Whitney Museum of American Art (2017), documenta 14 (2017), Swiss Institute (2020), Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen and Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (2022), among others.
