[ translate ]

"Love Is Eternal: A Novel of Mary Todd and Abraham Lincoln" by Irving Stone, published by Doubleday, 1954. First Edition, first printing with '1954' imprinted on the title page and "First Edition" stated on the copyright page.

Hard boards, original publisher's cloth with gold and red stamping on spine [a little wear, some staining]; 5.3/4" x 8.3/4"; 468 pages including Bibliography, a few page corner folds, very good condition.

A politically-minded young lady and an awkward lawyer marry and eventually become President and First Lady. "Love is Eternal" was the inscription Abraham Lincoln had engraved on the wedding ring he gave Mary Todd. This book tells Mary's own story, especially her romance with Abraham and her years of marriage which were happier than historians generally believe.

"This is a great read. Filled with terrific accounts of historical events. Mary Todd has had an unfair rap in history, in my opinion. What the woman endured was incredible. I finished this book with a completely different view of Lincoln than the history books left for us. He was an extraordinarily complicated man who had trouble making decisions. Perhaps, as politician he was a genius but I found him to be a depressed and isolated man." [private review]

"This is a terrific read regarding their marriage and personal life as he battled with the many problems of the presidency during the Civil War. I left this book feeling great compassion for Mary Todd Lincoln, who had a sad life. I highly recommend this well written account of the complicated life they endured in the White House." [private review]
