Italian School, late 18th century- Portrait of Antonio Vernier (c.1330-1400), Doge of Venice, bust-length, in profile turned to the left; oil on canvas, oval, 61 x 48.5 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, Marseille, since the 20th century. Note: Ostensibly from a series of portraits of the Doges of Venice and reproduced (with minor compositional differences and in reverse) in engraved form - see the engraving by Giacomo Piccini (c.1617-c.1669) from Leone Matina, 'Ducalis Regiae Lararium (Royal Ducal Lararium, Portraits of the Doges of Venice)', Venice, 1659. See also the engraving of Vernier by Johann Jakob Vogel, dating to c.1670-90, and held in the British Museum, no.1875,0710.6692. Vernier was the 62nd Doge of Venice and ruled from 1382-1400. He was known to be an incorruptible man and a very rigid discipline. During the period in which he was in power, the Venetian economy recovered and became particularly prosperous. The present work is ostensibly the only known portrait of the sitter.
