Blick vom linken Ufer des Tibers auf die drei damals noch erhaltenen Steinbögen der Brücke, deren Ursprünge bereits auf das Jahr 142 v. Chr. zurückgehen. Im heiligen Jahr 1575 wurde sie im Auftrag Papst Gregors XIII durch den Baumeister Matteo di Castello wiederhergestellt, jedoch alsbald bei erneutem Hochwasser wieder beschädigt. Die Brücke, von der heute nur noch ein Bogen erhalten ist, ist im Bild noch im Zustand gezeigt, bevor 1853 mit Reparaturen und letztlich mit dem Abriss zweier Bögen begonnen wurde. Insofern bildet das Gemälde eine wertvolle Quelle der römischen Denkmalpflege. Die Vedute angereichert durch Figurenstaffage und Schiffe, im Vordergrund in romantischer Absicht gemalte Steinfragmente. (12207441) (11)

View of the left riverbank of the River Tiber onto the then still intact stone arches of Rome’s oldest stone bridge dating back to 142 BC. Pope Gregory XIII commissioned builder Matteo di Castello to restore the bridge in 1575 but another flood damaged it soon after. The bridge, of which only one arch remains today, is shown in its pre-1853 condition before repairs were carried out and two of the arches were demolished. The painting therefore offers a valuable source for historic preservation in Rome.
