Jewish cemetery at Pera.

Signed and dated 1838.
After his studies at Antwerp Academy, Jacob Jacobs left for a long roundtrip to Constantinopel where he painted many oil sketches on the spot as e.g. this rare/unique view of the Jewish cemetery at Pera. For his many oil sketches J.Jacobs became known as the Turk.
The view of the Pera site shows details of a near derelict cemetery, overgrown by dense vegetation of the nearby shadowy woods, many of the tombstones have fallen down or are broken.
On his return journey, he visited other sites in the East, for ex. Egypt, Greece, Italy and Europe.
Quite differently in these Egyptian sketches, he discovers the strong golden desert light in Egypt, as in this small sketch, which can be attributed to him: Gebel dune in Assouan near the Nile River .
