Vintage silver print on double-weight semi-matte paper 50,5 x 40,5 cm, in excellent condition. Photographer's stamp "Archivally processed original photograph Jerry N. Nelsmann Copyright 19" with handwritten supplemented date "76", titled and signed in ink on the reverse. LITERATURE Mia Fineman (ed.), Faking It: Manipulated Photography before Photoshop, cat. MET, New York 2012. In the 1960s, when manipulation in the darkroom was largely taboo, Uelsmann revived the technique of combination printing developed by 19th century art photographers. His images are full of startling paradoxes, bizarre symbolism and contrasts in size. Uelsmann's work is now considered an important precursor of the seamless compositing that emerged with digital photography and Photoshop.
