Bronzes,Miniatures, Gandhara, Modern Indian Paintings and Sculpture dated 12th April 2017

Footnotes:
Jogen Chowdhury, an alumnus of the Government College of Art and Crafts,
Calcutta, and the prestigious École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris, underwent a
transformative artistic journey under the tutelage of Prodosh Das Gupta. In his formative
years, Chowdhury embraced the expressionist figuration style, cultivating a unique gallery of
the grotesque. His early works featured figures characterized by lewd exaggerations—men
with distended bellies resembling sacks and women with pendulous, hanging breasts. The
pivotal sojourn in Paris marked a profound chapter in Chowdhury's artistic evolution,
refining his creative ideation and contributing to the crystallization of his distinct personal
style. His interpretation of the human form reflects an x-ray vision of creativity, where
figures are attenuated, exaggerated, fragmented, and reconfigured through the lens of his
unique perspective. Chowdhury's artistic language transcends the literal, as he believes the
body should communicate in silence.Placing his figures against sparse backgrounds,
Chowdhury eschews the specificity of place, channeling emotions of anguish onto his
subjects through gestural mark-making. His meticulous crosshatched lines emulate body
hair, while a network of veins strips away the classical body's smooth sensuality, replacing it
with the raw textures of life. Jogen Chowdhury's oeuvre stands as a testament to his
mastery in conveying the human experience through a distinctive visual lexicon, resonating
with profound artistic depth.
