JOHN GEORGE BROWN
1831 - 1913
GIRL WITH KITTENS

signed copyright / J.G. Brown N.A. (lower right)
oil on canvas
30 by 25 ¼ inches
(76.2 by 64.1 cm)
Painted in 1890.

We would like to thank Martha Hoppin for her assistance with researching this lot.

Condition Report:
The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc., New York, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.

This work is in very good condition. The canvas is unlined and still stretched on its original stretcher. The tacking edges have been reinforced to allow for proper stretching. The paint layer is clean and varnished. The only retouches are a few tiny spots in the center of the bottom edge, and a couple of dots in the lower left and lower right corners. There are some areas that read darkly under ultraviolet light—for example the hair to the left of the ear on the left, and in front of the fingers holding the red ribbon—but this corresponds to original pigment. The work should be hung as is.

Provenance:
Private collection, Connecticut

By descent to the present owner
