JOHN WILLIAM CASILEAR Hudson River Landscape

[ translate ]

View of Lake George, with cows in the foreground, attributed to Casilear (American, 1811-1893). Oil on canvas. Measures 20" x 30" in 28" x 38" frame. Apparently unsigned. Could be a view of Cook Mountain from Spencer Point in Ticonderoga or possibly a view from Bolton Landing across the lake.
In addition to the age, subject and style: 1) The canvas is stamped "William Schaus, 303 Broadway" etc. According to Malcolm Goldstein's Landscape with Figures, Casilear's art was sold through Schaus' gallery. 2) The 303 Broadway address was Schaus' location from 1854-1855. According to multiple biographies of Casilear, the artist began focusing on landscape painting in 1854, and views of Lake George were his most frequent subjects. 3) The center of this painting depicts a sidewheeler -- a steamboat -- and the only steamboats with that shape were the John Jay, which ran from 1850-56 and the Minne Ha Ha, which ran from 1857-78. All in all, an easy attribution.
