Author:
Title: JON JUAN No. 1
Place Published: Toby [Indicia: Minoan Publishing Corp.?]
Publisher:
Date Published: Spring, 1950
Description:

CGC certified: G/VG (3.0). Cream to off-white pages. Cover: Al Reid. Scripts: Jerry Siegel. Art: Alex Schomburg. Used in SEDUCTION OF THE INNOCENT, p. 38. Overstreet says "Scarce." Gerber Photo-Journal Guide Scarcity Index: 5 ("Less than average in existence"). CGC Census: 29 Blue Label copies. GPAnalysis: A 3.0 copy sold for $300 in June 2020.

Dr. Wertham hated love comics, claiming they used romance as a pretext for tales of "humiliations, a disguised kind of psychological sadism." One-shot Jon Juan, produced by ex-Superman scribe Jerry Siegel and Timely cover man Alex Schomburg, was soundly panned by Wertham: "Just as there were supermen, superwomen, superboys and super-ducks, so the industry now supplied a 'super-lover.' Studying these love-confession books is even more tedious than studying the usual crime comic books. You have to wade through all the mushiness, the false sentiments, the social hypocrisy, the titillation, the cheapness."

A limited edition of 150 softcover and 15 hardcover catalogues is available. 400 lots, fully illustrated. Fun reference, great keepsake. Softcover $30, deluxe hardcover with dust jacket and limitation plate $200. Ten of the 15 hardcovers are pre-ordered and the rest will go quickly, so reserve yours now. To order, contact ivan@pbagalleries.com.

Consignments welcome for PBA's December 2021 Comic Book sale. Top prices for Pre-Code Horror, Golden Age, Silver Age, original art and ephemera. Send inquiries to ivan@pbagalleries.com.
