In 1803—1806, Lisyansky took part in the first Russian circumnavigation of the world as commander of the merchant ship 'Neva. ' The leader of the expedition and commander of the ship 'Nadezhda' was I. F. Krusenstern. On August 1, 1803, the ships left Kronstadt, crossed the Atlantic, rounded Cape Horn, sailed to the Pacific and reached the Hawaiian Islands. The 'Nadezhda' then went to Kamchatka and the 'Neva' to Alaska, where Lisyansky stayed for over a year. On the way back, the ships met in Canton (Guangzhou), reached South Africa together and then split up again. For the first time in the history of shipping, Lisyansky traveled from Canton to Portsmouth without docking in ports (the 'Neva' spent 142 days uninterrupted at sea). In August 1806, the expedition returned to Kronstadt. She explored little-known areas of the Pacific Ocean, observed ocean currents, temperatures, and the specific gravity of water, prepared hydrographic descriptions of the coasts, and collected extensive ethnographic material. During the trip, Lisyansky corrected numerous inaccuracies in sea descriptions and maps.

In the present work, Lisyansky left a comprehensive description of the trip. Among other things, he described exotic animal and plant worlds, the life and beliefs of Pacific Islanders and even created a dictionary of the inhabitants of the islands of Nuka Giva, Hawaii and Kodiak, which were once of great importance for sailors on long trips. Lisyansky himself also translated the book into English.Show more
