Jalisco Pottery Kneeling Female Figure

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A fabulous handmade pottery figure of a kneeling female figure exhibiting a square body, stubbed arms projecting from broad shoulders, a curved stomach, and pointed breasts. Supported by a thick neck, her enormous, ovoid head presents a pair of almond-shaped eyes, an elongated forehead, a projecting nose with a ring-form septum ornament, full lips, and a gently opened mouth bearing top and bottom rows of incised teeth. A hood-like headdress tops her stylized visage, just above two curved ears, each fit with circular earspools. Attenuated lower legs sit below her bulbous thighs. Boasting a lustrous burnish, the intriguing figure is embellished in cream-hued glaze with a burnt orange pigment covering her skirt, and black-painted designs on her breasts, chest, neck, and earspools.
