Jamacoaque Pottery Female Whistle Figure

[ translate ]

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Jamacoaque (Jama Coaque) culture, ca. 500 CE. A charming hand-built pottery female figure, standing upright with her short arms adorned with bangles and held at her sides. Wearing a short dress, the ancient figure presents a thick body, square shoulders, and a huge head displaying almond-shaped eyes, a bulbous nose, and a closed mouth. A voluminous headdress caps her stylized visage, as prominent ears with heavy adornments are featured just below. A set of 3 perforations on her verso allowed her to previously function as a whistle. Size: 3.3" W x 7.5" H (8.4 cm x 19 cm)

The Jamacoaque culture, named for the towns of Jama and Coaque of the Pacific coast of Ecuador, is known for its pottery, especially large human-shaped molded statues adorned with appliques and painted with rich pigments. Dress and ornament were identifiers of clans and ethnic groups and markers of rank among many ancient American peoples. Information encoded in elements of clothing and jewelry would have been understood by the members of those groups.

Provenance: private Southern California collection, California, USA, acquired through descent 2006; ex-private California collection, USA, before 2000

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
