James Brown, Untitled Mixed Media
Oil, watercolor, and mixed media on paper, signed and dated 1984 lower right. Sight size:
37" ht. x 24" wd., framed size: 49" ht. x 36" wd.
Brown was a Los Angeles born artist who resided most of his career in Paris, but exhibited in New York, Europe and Mexico throughout his career. He rejected much of the notions he learned at the Ecole Des Beaux Arts, and instead focused on painterly abstraction, with a considerable African and primitive influence. Many such faces were produced during this period of the early 1980s, when the work was purchased by the consignor.
