"Egypt As It Is" by James Carlile McCoan, with a supplementary chapter of Recent Events by Wilfred C Lay. Nations of the World Series published by Peter Fenelon Collier, New York, 1898.

Hard boards, original red cloth [a little surface wear], gold lettering on spine, 6" x 8.1/2"; slightly damaged title page [see photo]; stamp of J. Griff Edwards on front endpaper and contents page; 431 pages including Index + 4 illustrations on glossy paper, a little foxing of plates and pages next to plates, very good condition.

McCoan's 'Egypt' (1877) offers a broad panorama of the 19th century' Egypt and the people who live there: description of the cities, way of live, living costs, economy, politics, statistics, Egypt's recent history & politics, new developments and future prospects.

James Carlile McCoan (1829-1904) was an Irish Home Rule League, Liberal and independent politician, author and journalist. He entered Middle Temple in at age 22 in 1851, before being called to the bar in 1856, where he joined the south-eastern circuit. He did not however seek practice in England, instead pursuing a journalism career and being appointed war correspondent at Charles Dickens' "The Daily News" during the Crimean War. Towards the end of the war, McCoan travelled in Georgia and Circassia, before settling in Constantinople where he worked in the supreme consular court until 1864, and founded the first English newspaper in Turkey, "The Levant Herald," which was for some time subsidized by the UK government. However, in 1870, he disposed of the paper and returned to England.

John Griff Edwards (1870 – 1912) belonged to the old established settler family in Virginia. His father and uncles served in the Army of Northern Virginia during the Civil War. The grandfather, LeRoy Griffin Edwards (1804-1866), was the president of the Confederate Convention of 1864. John's wife, Mrs. J. Griff Edwards founded and led the first of the United Confederate Choirs of America (1907). After that she was elected the 'Commander in Chief of the United Confederate Choirs.' In 1911 she published a volume titled "Echoes From Dixie A Collection of Songs Used in the South."
