J.E.H. MacDonald’s colleague from Grip Ltd., Fred Peel, owned a cottage just north of Coboconk, located in the Haliburton region just below the southern edge of Algonquin Park. While on holiday from his teaching commitments in Toronto, MacDonald spent part of the summers of 1921, 1922 and 1923 there, finding ample subjects along the shores of the nearby Gull River and Turtle Lake. The works painted here feel more relaxed and at ease than his audaciously energetic Algoma works from a few years previous, and a sense of loose confidence is palpable in scenes such as this fine sketch.

A tree (beech or maple, its smooth trunk marred and knotted) emerges from a grassy hillside scattered with rocks. In the mid-ground a screen of trees lines the near shore of the lake, with the hills of the far shore visible in the distance. MacDonald keeps the colours remarkably cool, evoking the last vestiges of the dawn chill with a reduced palette of grey blues and earthy greens. Effortlessly evocative and briskly rendered, this charming scene is a quiet interlude by MacDonald at the height of his career.

A 1921 pencil sketch of a similar scene, entitled Coboconk, is held in the Firestone Collection of Canadian Art at the Ottawa Art Gallery (acc. #FAC 0923). Listen Stop
