Catalogue Note:
Self-taught painter Jammies Holmes (b. 1984, Thibodaux, Louisiana) is known for his portrayals of intimate, poignant scenes of distinctly American community, family, and traditions. Following his graduation from high school, Holmes spent four years in the army and fourteen years working in an oil field. He relocated to Dallas in 2016. Holmes draws heavily on his own recollections to depict the stories and experiences of Black life in the American Deep South, capturing moments of celebration and struggle. Working intuitively and without formal artistic training, Holmes creates expressive tableaux that incorporate portraiture, symbols, text, and objects to reveal universal truths through personal narratives.

His work has been presented in exhibitions at Library Street Collective, Detroit; Deitch Projects, Los Angeles; Marianne Boesky, New York; Nassima-Landau Projects, Tel Aviv; Dallas Museum of Art; Dallas Contemporary; and LMAK Gallery, Dallas. He will have his first New York one-person exhibition with Marianne Boesky Gallery in September 2022.

Provenance:
Kindly donated by the artist and Marianne Boesky Gallery
