- Jan Baptist Bosschaert or Jan Baptist Bosschaert the Younger was a Flemish still life painter known primarily for his decorative still lifes featuring flowers. He collaborated with figure artists on compositions that combined allegorical or mythological scenes with still life elements. He worked in Antwerp. Jan Baptist Bosschaert was born in Antwerp, the son of the painter and baker Jan Baptist and his second wife Joanna de Bie, sister of the painter Erasmus de Bie. His father died young, leaving Jan Baptist in a poor home and uneducated. At the age of 17 he is said to have still been illiterate. When young Jan Baptist showed a talent for art, his brothers, who were his guardians, placed him in the care of the flower painter Jan Baptist de Crépu, with whom he studied from the year 1685 onwards. He also lived in Crépu's household. Another pupil of Crépu who studied at the same time as Bosschaert was the flower painter Simon Hardimé. Jan Baptist de Crépu fled from his creditors in 1688 and died in Brussels the following year. In 1692-1693 Bosschaert became a master of the Guild of St. Luke in Antwerp. Bosschaert worked in Antwerp as a flower painter and received many commissions from the local bourgeoisie.
