Jan Griffier the Younger, Dutch 1698-1773- Riders with a view of a manor house, traditionally identified as Stocks House, Hertfordshire; signed and dated ‘J. Griffier 1734’ and with later inscription ‘Stocks House / Aldbury/ Hert*’, oil on canvas, 81x106cm Provenance: Private collection of Victor Aubrey Lownes III (April 17, 1928-January 11, 2017). Lownes was an executive for HMH Publishing Company Inc., later known as Playboy Enterprises, from 1955 through the early 1980s. Note: Little is known about the enigmatic Jan Griffier the Younger, but he is thought to have been baptised in Amsterdam and was active in Great Britain. He is best known for his animated paintings of animals and landscapes. Like his father, the acclaimed Jan Griffier I (c.1645-1718), Griffier the younger preferred panoramic bird’s eye view formats. This is evident in the present lot, a panoramic view of manor house identified as Stocks House by a later inscription. Griffier’s most impressive works have similar bird’s eye views, such as his View of Winchester in the city’s art gallery and the View of the Thames during the Great Frost of 1739 in Guildhall Art Gallery. Records regarding ownership and tenancies of Stocks’ grounds go back as far as the 12th century. In the 17th century, Stocks was in the possession of a Robert Duncombe (d.1630), an ancestor of the Lords Feversham. The house descended through his family and in 1734 Stocks appears to have been owned by John Duncombe (1679-1746), who is buried in Aldbury Church. One could speculate that he was the one who commissioned Griffier to paint lots 32 and 33. Upon his death, his son Arnold inherited the house. Arnold demolished the house in 1773 and rebuilt it as we know it today, it was however enlarged and altered on several occasions.
