Jan Theodoor Kruseman was born in Amsterdam as the son of Jan Adam Kruseman (1804-1862) and Alida de Vries (1799-1862) . After originally seeking a career in sea shipping he later turned his choice to drawing and painting. He received drawing lessons in 1851 from Everhardus Koster (1817-1892) . In 1853 he left for Brussels, where he painted for two years and was advised by Willem Roelofs (1822-1879) , with whom he also traveled through Luxembourg and Germany. He then worked for some time with his father, who was then a celebrated portrait painter. He also spent some time on the island of Terschelling to paint seascapes. He further trained under the direction of Nicolaas Riegen (1827-1889) and in 1857 with Louis Meijer (1809-1866) . In the company of the latter and of Maurits de Haas (1832-1895) he traveled Normandy, Brittany and Jersey. Finally, in 1860, after a trip to England, he returned to Brussels, where he remained until his death. In 1884 Jan Theodoor Kruseman was appointed knight in the Venezuelan order of the Bust of the Liberator
