Japanese Bronze Lidded Censer

DESCRIPTION: Elaborately crafted, reticulated bronze censer with a variety of motifs fashioned into its body and lid. Sides of body have textured fowl including peacocks, fenghuangs (Chinese phoenixes), and other birds; these birds are perched on and against a reticulated background of foliage framed by geometric and medallion borders. Censer handles are dragons: one with an open mount and one with a closed mouth. Lid is decorated with a reticulated foliage dome topped with a komainu (Japanese foo dog or lion dog) before which is a smaller komainu. Piece is attached to a base by four feet in the shape of and surrounded by gourds and foliage. Base is decorated with a central etching of a Chinese dragon, and its edges are ringed with curvilinear shapes.
