Japanese Edo Period Lacquered Wood Kawari Kabuto

East Asia, Japan, late Edo period, ca. early to mid-19th century CE. A mold-shaped wooden helmet known as a kawari kabuto that is modeled after a Chinese courtier's cap. The domed design features a broad rim with an arched frontal sight hole as well as a crested top. The entire hat is covered in jet black lacquer and displays bright red lacquer within the interior. Tufts of orange threads indicate a pair of padded straps were attached at one time. Size: 17" L x 16.25" W x 7.8" H (43.2 cm x 41.3 cm x 19.8 cm)

Condition Report: Original padded straps missing. Small losses to areas of brim as shown. Nicks and abrasions to brim, interior, and top crest, with chipping and minor fading to original pigment, and slight deformation. Light earthen deposits and nice remains of original glaze throughout.
