Japanese Meiji Calligraphy Brushes, Jade, Stone & Bone

East Asia, Japan, Meiji era, ca. 1868 to 1912 CE. A fine set of three brushes used for creating calligraphic characters using broad brushstrokes and dark ink. The first brush's handle features six incised stones of a sumptuous red hue. The second brush features a handle formed from seven nephrite discs showcasing green, yellow-green, citrine, and red-orange hues. The handle of the largest brush is carved from a single tube of forest-green nephrite with pale green veining. Each brush has ungulate bone brush housings and end caps as well as thick horsehair brushes. Size of largest (solid nephrite handle): 16.5" L x 1.6" W (41.9 cm x 4.1 cm)

Provenance: private Centennial, Colorado, USA collection, inherited from relative

Condition Report: All items reassembled with adhesive residue along handles and bone components. All items have minor abrasions and nicks to handles and bone components as well as light fraying to horsehair brushes. Nice coloration to stone and bone.
