Title: Japanese Meiji Satsuma Beaker Vase
Size: 4 5/8” (11.7 cm) tall x 3 1/8” (7.9 cm) diameter.
Description: An elaborately decorated beaker-shaped vase with the Eight Legions and a ferocious dragon wrapped around the entire vase. The designs are very elaborate and the body of the vase is nearly completely covered. The faces of the Legions are very expressive. The dragon, in particular, is quite amazing.
The well-cut foot ring is raised and not glazed. The base is glazed and marked with a 6-character mark. I believe the mark identifies the piece as being made for the Yokahama merchant Hododa.
MEASUREMENTS
4 5/8” (11.7 cm) tall x 3 1/8” (7.9 cm) diameter. Weighs 6.9 oz (200 g)
CONDITION
There are no cracks or breaks. Wear to the gilding on the mouth, but otherwise the vase shows very little wear. There is a small smear of red glaze on the inside of the mouth, as well as a few black stains in the throat and bottom of the inside of the vase.
