"A Short System Of Polite Learning: Being An Epitome Of The Arts And Sciences; Being An Epitome of the Arts and Sciences Designed For The Use Of Schools." By an Eminent Writer of Philadelphia [Daniel Jaudon], published by McCarthy and Davis, Philadelphia, later printing of the enlarged and improved 9th Edition, with '1830' on the bottom of the title page and copyright of the 9th Edition 1826; illustrated with engraved frontispiece.

The success of this bestseller was based on the fact that this textbook addressed the specific needs of American system of education of the 18th-early 19th centuries: 'one class,' two-year schooling. The teacher had to teach various age groups and different subjects in one classroom at the same time. The majority of the traditional, from England exported, textbooks were barely suitable for such educational method. Addressing this issue, Jaurdon's system was a universal textbook designed for various age groups and subjects, suitable for self-learning and 'one class' school system. In addition, this textbook provided clear formulated definitions which were useful guidelines for teacher.
