Artist Jean Lurçat (French, 1892–1966) worked in a variety of mediums and was known for his revival of modern tapestry. He studied at the Académie Colorassi and was an appreintice to Jean-Paul Lafitte. Lurçat traveled extensively and exhibited his work alongside renowned Modern artists such as Picasso, Matisse, Derain, and Raoul Dufy. While living in New York, he produced decorations and costumes for the Jardin Public and for the ballets of renowned choreographer George Balanchine. His work has been collected by multiple institutions including the Musée national d’Art moderne, Musée Occidental, Musée des Arts Décoratifs, and Musée Réattu, among others.
