The work from 1969 shows how Jef Diederen increasingly distanced himself from traditional representation in the late sixties and opted for a free, intuitive visual language. Color, line and form here become autonomous carriers of meaning. Organic contours, spontaneous gestures and vibrant color fields seem to move across the paper in a rhythm that is both playful and carefully constructed.

The layering of the mixed technique enhances the dynamism of the composition. Drawing, painting and collaged elements flow together into an image in which order and freedom continually encounter each other. The bright primary colors contrast with dark areas, creating a powerful tension between structure and expression.

Characteristic of Diederen is his search for a direct, almost poetic form of abstraction. His work does not arise from a fixed plan, but from a process of discovery, reaction and association. This gives the painting an open character: the viewer is invited to discover their own meanings and connections.

Within Jef Diederen’s oeuvre, the period around 1969 marks a phase of great artistic freedom, in which experimentation, spontaneity and color perception are central.
