Jefferson Davis & Stephenson 1861 VA Ballots
Seven duplicate Confederate voting ballots for Jefferson Davis as President and Alexander Stephens as Vice-President. Printed on light blue paper and headed "Election, Wednesday, November 6th, 1861". Each bears the autograph signature of a voter, on verso, with surnames including: Bentley, Jackson, Porter, Frasier, Davis, Gill, Shepherd, and Glenn. Though inaugurated in February 1861, Davis was considered the "Provisional" President. He did not become "official" until this November election ratified the choice. Despite running unopposed, many citizens went to the polls to "select" their first Confederate president. Provenance: Dr. Alan York Estate. [6 1/4 x 4 inches]. All bear spindle holes near center. Other defects include a few examples with ink show-through from signatures on verso and fold wear.
