Jens Juel (b. Balslev, Funen 1745, d. Copenhagen 1802)
Jens Juel (b. Balslev, Funen 1745, d. Copenhagen 1802)
Portrait of a young noble woman. Shown en face turned to the right. The sitter wears a green-violet silk gown adorned with lace ruffles along the neckline and at the elbows. A large green bow at the chest. Her hair is arranged high and powdered, with a curl falling over each shoulder, and overlaid with a tulle veil embellished with a blue flower. Blue eyes. Ca. 1785. Unsigned. Oil on canvas. 78 × 63 cm.
The work is dated on the basis of contemporary dress and hairstyle, and through comparison with portraits by Jens Juel from the same period, including no. 319, Portrait of Else Marie Bülow, née Hoppe (1767–1834), and no. 338, Portrait of Juliane Reventlow, née Schimmelmann (1763–1816), in Ellen Poulsen’s catalogue raisonné of Jens Juel’s paintings, 1991.
It has not been possible to identify the sitter among Jens Juel’s known Danish clientele. It is conceivable that she should instead be sought in Schleswig-Holstein or northern Germany.
Bruun Rasmussen wishes to thank author and mag.art. in Art History Charlotte Christensen for the attribution and her assistance in the cataloguing of the work. Charlotte Christensen is a leading expert on Jens Juel and has authored several books and articles on the artist. She was also responsible for the exhibition and accompanying catalogue “Hvis Engle kunne male... Jens Juels portrætkunst” at the Museum of National History at Frederiksborg Castle in 1996.
