Jerome Bonaparte, fils de Napoleon - Lettre à sa fille la Princesse Mathilde - 1844

[ translate ]

Beautiful hand written letter written and signed on paper with her coat of arms. It begins with “Ma bonne Mathilde” L. A. S. Jerome, sl [1842-1846] , to his daughter Princess Mathilde. He is delighted to be able to see her again after her absence, «Dieu soit loué tout s’est passé à merveille et le résultat a passé mes espérances ! . . . ». 1 p octavo, in very good condition. On the death of Napoleon in exile, after several years of wandering between Austria and Italy (where their daughter Mathilde was born in Trieste on 27 May 1820 and their second son, Prince Napoleon, on 9 September 1822) , Jerome and his family settled in Rome, with Madame Mère. Then the upheaval caused by the Bonapartist movement, in which Louis' sons participated, including the future Napoleon III, displeased the authorities, forcing Jerome to settle in Florence. In 1835, Queen Catherine died, followed twelve years later by their eldest son, Jerome, who was then a colonel in the army of the King of Wurtemberg. At one time engaged to her cousin Prince Louis Napoleon, Princess Mathilde married Prince Demidoff in 1840, a marriage that bailed out the finances of the bride's father but ended with a shady separation arbitrated, in 1847, by Tsar Nicholas I. Moreover, King Jerome, who had had many mistresses throughout his life, morganatically married the Marquise Giustina Bartholini.
