Jilali Gharbaoui’s Untitled (1955) stands as a defining early work by one of Morocco’s foremost pioneers of abstraction. The surface erupts in gestural force — sweeping strokes of ochre, black, and blue collide in an emotional tempest. Gharbaoui paints not objects but sensations: the motion of thought, the turbulence of spirit, and the eternal struggle between chaos and control.

Executed in oil on canvas, this piece marks Gharbaoui’s transition from figuration to lyrical abstraction — a language through which he would express the psychological and metaphysical terrain of existence. Each stroke carries weight and rhythm; density and void play in counterpoint, every gesture an act of liberation.

Created during his Paris years, Untitled (1955) embodies a dialogue between post-war European modernism and North African sensibility. It is both intensely personal and profoundly universal — a painting that transcends geography to distill emotion in its purest state, poised between despair and transcendence.
