Provenance:-Collection Mr H.C. Kranenburg, Rotterdam, grandfather of the present owner, since the 1950s.-Auction, Sotheby's, Amsterdam, 26 April 1999, lot 305, where acquired by the son of Mr Kranenburg, thence by descent to the present owner.
It has been suggested that this is a building site around the Heemraadssingel in Rotterdam. This watercolour has possibly been painted by Van Mastenbroek from his studio at the Heemraadsplein.Hendrik Cornelis Kranenburg (1902-1976) was a Rotterdam dentist and was a member of the Senate where he was a zealous spokesman on traffic and water management and public health. He was active as a municipal councillor in Rotterdam, a member of the States and a dike reeve. Since the 1950s, he collected various works by his fellow townsman, the painter Johan Hendrik van Mastenbroek.
