Johan Hendrik van Mastenbroek (1875-1945), ‘SOS / The heroes of the North Sea / Shipwreck at Hoek van Holland’

signed ‘J.H. Van Mastenbroek’ and dated ‘1929’ r.o. Verso: signed and annotated in the artist’s handwriting ‘S.O.S. les héros de la mer du Nord’ (on the stretcher). Also verso: several labels signed in his handwriting and with titles: ‘SOS De helden der Noordzee’ / ‘S.O.S. les héros de la mer du Nord’ (2x) & sales label with title, price and his address ’82 Gentsestraat Scheveningen Holland' & exhibition label from 1930 with name and address stating the name of his villa ‘Quambi’ Belgisch park Scheveningen. In 1912 Van Mastenbroek moved from Rotterdam to Scheveningen but kept returning to Rotterdam regularly. He worked out the sketches he made there on the spot into paintings in his studio which he had built on the ground floor of his Scheveningen villa ‘Quambi’ (resting place).
