Jan H. B. Koekkoek was the third son of the marine painter Hermanus Koekkoek, and was taught by his father, whose influence is still clearly visible in the careful manner of painting and fine detailing of his early sea and river views. In later years he sought more and more connections with the Hague School and he painted beach and seascapes and scenes from the fisherman's life in a loose painting style. \r
