This work, "mare and foal" is signed and dated 1854. It is an oil/panel 24. 8x30. 5 cm.
Purchased at Christie's, at auction 5471, "Sporting & Wildlife Art", in South Kensington, London, on 7-9-14.
In 1845, he was awarded the title of the “Official Animal Painter” of the Duchess of Kent, and was thereafter commissioned by Queen Victoria throughout the rest of his life.
Herring is considered, along with Edwin Landseer, to be one of the most eminent animal painters of the mid-19th century. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1818 to 1865 and at the Society of British Artists from 1836 to 1852.
