[ translate ]

The Property of a Private Collector
John Frederick Herring Sr.
Surrey 1795 - 1863 Meopham, Kent
A brindle Greyhound bitch in a landscape

signed and dated lower right: J.F.Herring / 1820.
oil on panel
unframed: 45 x 61.1 cm.; 17 3/4 x 24 1/8 in.
framed: 56.9 x 72.5 cm.; 22 3/8 x 28 1/2 in.

Condition Report:
The panel is uncradled, flat and stable. The paint surface is clean, and the varnish is very slightly discoloured. The pigments appear bright and much of the impasto brushwork remains intact. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a milky varnish, underneath which little intervention is revealed: small spots scattered in the sky, and three, more concentrated horizontal lines of retouching (centre, centre right and upper right), the largest being that in the centre, just above the dog, which measures 1 x 10 cm. The painting is in overall good condition.

Provenance:
With Spink, London, 1973;
Anonymous sale, London, Sotheby's, 9 April 1997, lot 129;
Private collection, UK.
