John James Audubon (American, 1785-1851) Mocking Bird. Hand-colored aquatint dated between 1827-1838, Plate XXI of 'Birds of America', Havell edition with watermark 'J. Whatman Turkey Mill' 33" x 23" Sheet: 38 1/4" x 25 1/8" Frame: 45" x 35 1/4"
Condition Report: The sheet measures 38 1/4" x 25 1/8" with the watermark 'J WHATMAN / TURKEY MILL'. There is an overall darkening of the sheet, both recto and verso, as well as a mat burn and damp staining around the sheet edges (not mold or mildew). There is a 1 1/4" S-shaped tear in the lower left corner of the sheet, and a 1/2" tear near the lower right sheet corner with a small loss. There is a 1/2" tear in the upper edge. Verso has splotchy stains overall as well as brown paper tape around the edges. The colors remain very good
