Partly-printed vellum DS as president, one page, 13.5 x 17.5, April 12, 1844. President Tyler appoints Hiram Paulding as "a Captain in the Navy." Signed at the conclusion by John Tyler, and countersigned by John Y. Mason as secretary of the Navy. White naval department seal remains affixed to lower vignette. In fine condition. Paulding was a Rear Admiral in the United States Navy, who served from the War of 1812 until after the Civil War. After the war he served as governor of the Naval Asylum at Philadelphia and as post-admiral at Boston.
