Jonathan Loxley (British, b. 1960) Aida Gilt limestone on composition stone base The head 135cm high, 383cm high overall On view at: The Sculpture Park Jonathan Loxley?s father was a fighter pilot, and this meant that the artist travelled widely throughout his youth. Between 1979 and 1981, Loxley painted stage sets and created sculptures for film and theatre sets, including cult films such as Labyrinth and A Fish Called Wanda. Loxley started on his current path as a sculptor in 1989, after a near fatal experience with malaria, which he contracted while working as a safari driver in Kenya the previous year. He established a studio in Carrara, Italy, known for its world famous marble. It was also in Italy where Loxley honed his craft, studying marble sculpture techniques in Florence. Jonathan had several exhibitions in Italy and across Europe, and then in 1993, was commissioned by David Bowie to create a sculpture to celebrate Bowie?s marriage to Iman. In 1999, Loxley took part in The Shape of the Century - 100 Years of Sculpture in Britain at Canary Wharf, London. His work has also featured at the Hampton Court Flower Show, Henley Art Show and the Cass Foundation?s Goodwood Sculpture Park. Loxley?s works play with ideas of weight and lightness, and through fluid shapes and textures, the heavy stone materials are transformed into weightless forms.
