Large, very beautiful Spanish Old Master painting depicting "The conversion of Saint Paul" attributed to Juan Antonio de Frías y Escalante. The painting shows the moment when the Apostle St. Paul was converted to Christianity after Christ appeared to him, while St. Paul was on his way to Damascus to persecute Christians there. The composition is very skilfully structured with St. Paul as the focal point in the middle, to the left and right there are several figures witnessing the miracle and watching in awe. The painter beautifully rendered all their different emotions and anatomy. The painterly technique and the figure of Christ with the text are quite similar in spirit to Christ in Esteban Murillo's "Conversion of St Paul", which hangs in the Prado. In good condition, some small inpainting, a stable canvas and new stretcher.
