Jules Verne ANS Dating From the Year He Published "Two Years' Vacation," His South Pacific Adventure Novel

A stock card fully engrossed in French by novelist Jules Verne (1828-1905), and signed by him as "Jules Verne" at center. Written in March 1888 with over 35 words in Verne's hand. Scrapbook album mounting traces verso, else near fine. 5" x 2.625."

The card is transcribed in full:

"Très volontiers, Monsieur, je vous adresse les lignes qui un demande votre sympathique lettre, en vous priant de m'excuser, si je n'ai pas vous répondu plus tôt.

Votre bien devoué

Jules Verne

Mars 88."

Translated:

"Very willingly, Monsieur, will I address the lines which your sympathetic letter demands, praying that you excuse me if I haven't responded to you earlier.

Your well devoted

Jules Verne

March 88."

Verne may have been a little preoccupied in 1888. In that year, he entered French politics by becoming town councilor of Amiens in northern-central France. His latest adventure novel was also published; "Two Years' Vacation" recounts the story of a group of boys shipwrecked on a South Pacific Island. During Verne's prolific 40+-year-long literary career, he essentially invented the new sub-genre of science fiction. "Journey to the Center of the Earth" (1864), "From the Earth to the Moon" (1865), "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea" (1870), and "Around the World in Eighty Days" (1872) are some of his most popular works.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
