Description: At first glance, this double portrait showing Johann Peter Hebel, the poet who became famous as the author of the "Alemannic Poems", and Elisabeth Baustlicher, a 19-year-old from near Freiburg, seems a little strange: aren't they both looking past each other? Aren't they standing a little too close to each other to be engaged in a pontificating conversation? And isn't the landscape somehow more thought than seen and too far removed in relation to the people? In fact, the feeling that we are dealing with a collage is not deceptive. For Carl Joseph Agricola painted the model for a second version of the picture (with St Stephen's Church in Karlsruhe in the background instead of the Wiesengrund) in different sections and put both portraits to paper on different days. This temporal separation in itself supports the set-piece-like character. In fact, the two sitters have nothing to do with each other. They did not know each other and the connection is only established by the girl's Markgräfler costume, which Hebel made famous in his poem "Die Wiese" (The Meadow) and to which the scenic background seems to serve as an illustration. That Agricola nevertheless created a haunting pictorial motif with this combination is also shown by the fact that it became widespread as a stamp motif in the mid-1990s. But our lithograph in the artist's own hand also shows the demand for the motif that already existed at the time of its creation.

Beschreibung: Auf den ersten Blick wirkt dieses Doppelporträt, das Johann Peter Hebel, den als Verfasser der "Alemannischen Gedichte" berühmt gewordenen Dichter, und Elisabeth Baustlicher, eine 19-jährige aus der Nähe von Freiburg, zeigt, ein wenig befremdlich: Schauen beide nicht aneinander vorbei? Stehen sie nicht ein bisschen zu nahe aneinander, um in ein dozierendes Gespräch vertieft zu sein? Und ist die Landschaft nicht irgendwie mehr gedacht als gesehen und im Verhältnis zu den Personen zu weit entrückt? Tatsächlich täuscht das Gefühl, man hat es hier mit einer Collage zu tun, nicht. Denn Carl Joseph Agricola hat die Vorlage für eine zweite Version des Bildes (im Hintergrund mit der St. Stephanskirche in Karlsruhe statt des Wiesengrunds) in verschiedenen Abschnitten gemalt und beide Bildnisse an unterschiedlichen Tagen zu Papier gebracht. Schon diese zeitliche Trennung unterstützt den versatzstückartigen Charakter. Tatsächlich haben beide Dargestellten auch nichts miteinander zu tun. Sie kannten sich nicht und die Verbindung stellt sich lediglich durch die Markgräfler Tracht des Mädchens her, die Hebel in seinem Gedicht "Die Wiese" bekannt gemacht hat und zu dem der landschaftliche Hintergrund als Illustration zu dienen scheint. Dass Agricola mit dieser Kombination dennoch ein eindringliches Bildmotiv geschaffen hat, zeigt auch die Tatsache, dass es Mitte der 1990er Jahre als Briefmarkenmotiv Verbreitung fand. Aber auch unsere eigenhändige Lithographie des Künstlers zeigt die schon zur Entstehungszeit bestehende Nachfrage nach dem Motiv.
