French language publication of Kaempfer's notable history, one of the most influential histories to shape the West's conception of Japan. Kaempfer (1651-1716) was a Swedish physician and diplomat. He visited Japan in 1690-92 as part of the Dutch East India Company and was twice allowed to visit Edo. The important large folding map, "Imperium Japonicum in Sexaginta et Octo Provincias Divisum," by Johann Jakob Scheuchzer (46x53.1 cm), has insets of Kamchatka, and a depiction of Niphon from a Japanese map. There are engraved vignettes of a fisherman, a barrel maker, and a fortune teller. The map has short tears with slight loss at the fold intersections, and some minor ill-creasing.
Condition Report: Some rubbing to covers, a bit bowed, front joint cracking on Vol. I, with a few punctures to that cover not intruding through front pastedown; occasional light mostly marginal staining within, very good.
