He created the ‘One Dollar’ sculpture as well as the trophy for the 43rd edition of the Deauville American Film Festival. Artistic career: Karl Lagasse's career began in 1996 when he was 15 years old, with the sale of his first work in Antwerp. A few years later, in 2003, he prepared his first exhibition in Paris, where he exhibited his works mixing collage and painting, as Yvaral Vasarely, son of Hungarian artist Victor Vasarely, had suggested to him when they met in 1998. He began sculpting in 2004 and took inspiration from seeing ‘Les Nuits Blanches’ (which ones?) . He then began looking for his own style and started work on the ‘Buildings’ series, ‘Totem’ artworks composed of assorted materials. The same year, he left Paris to settle in Normandy. In 2006, Isy Brachot (famous gallery in Brussels) devoted a show to his work. A single painting was not bought. Karl Lagasse then gave it away to an admirer who was not able to buy it. In 2008, he came back to Paris to exhibit his work at the Espace Pierre Cardin. The show featured paintings, sculptures and photographs. A film about the creation of the works was also screened there. In 2009, the artist created one of his most emblematic works, the ‘One Dollar’. A work resulting from his admiration for the United States, but also symbolising what can be done with just one dollar, ‘Making art with $1’. In 2010, he was chosen to represent Deauville (Normandy, France) at the ‘Horsemania’ World Equestrian Games taking place in Lexington, Kentucky (USA) , a sister city of Deauville, for which he created a sculpture. After the ‘One Dollar’, which met with international success, he presented another work which also became iconic, ‘Cryptogram One’. It was first unveiled to the general public at the 2011 Art Monaco salon. To celebrate the 65th anniversary of the Cannes Film Festival in 2012, in collaboration with Corbis, he created a ‘Building’, 2. 80 x 60 cm, made of cement, wood, glass and photographs, and exhibited it at the Carlton Cinema Club. Artists present at the festival were invited to sign the work, to leave a message on it. Those who signed included José Garcia, Michel Hazanvisius, Bérénice Bejo, and Gad Elmaleh, as well as Cuba Gooding Jr. , Tim Roth, Matthew Mc. Conaughey and Zac Efron.
