Korean Joseon Dynasty Buncheong Maebyeong Vase

[ translate ]

East Asia, Korea, Joseon (also Yi) Dynasty, ca. early 15th century to late 16th century CE. A beautiful, wheel-thrown maebyeong (stoneware) vase with a planar base, an inverted piriform body, a rounded shoulder, and a petite, flared mouth on top. The exterior of the vessel is enveloped in buncheong (powder green) celadon glaze that creates a verdant ground for the abundant floral and foliate motifs that course across the midsection. While celadon-glazed pottery vessels from the preceding Goryeo Dynasty were considered to be somewhat more refined, buncheong vessels were intended to be more unassuming and natural in their aesthetic. Size: 6.4" W x 11.4" H (16.3 cm x 29 cm)

For a stylistically similar example with elaborate fish motifs, please see The British Museum, museum number 1936,1012.129.

Provenance: private California, USA collection, acquired over fifteen years ago

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.

#149987
