Kplé Kplé Mask of the Goli Ceremony Baule culture, Ivory Coast. First half of the 20th century. Wood. Height: 36 cm; Width: 24 cm; Depth: 7 cm. Mask in wood of a circular form topped by two horns curved into an arch. The face is smooth. Only the open-worked eyes and mouth present a light relief. The border of the mask is decorated with a collar incised with triangles. These sorts of masks are used during the Goli ceremonies, which commemorate new crops, paying tribute to important visitors and funerals.
