Den broderede skærm på nærværende maleri har Zahrtmann ligeledes benyttet i et selvportræt fra samme år. Familien Dessau hørte i Zahrtmanns sidste leveår til den nærmeste omgangskreds og især blev den unge student Kaj tæt knyttet til maleren. 1914 besøgte familie Dessau endog Zahrtmann i Casa d’Antino.
