“Kaj Dessau, stud. art., født 1897”. Portrait of a young art student looking en face. The background is an embroideret screen showing young men in renaissance dress. Signed and dated with monogram 1916. Oil on canvas. 65×57 cm.

Den broderede skærm på nærværende maleri har Zahrtmann ligeledes benyttet i et selvportræt fra samme år. Familien Dessau hørte i Zahrtmanns sidste leveår til den nærmeste omgangskreds og især blev den unge student Kaj tæt knyttet til maleren. 1914 besøgte familie Dessau endog Zahrtmann i Casa d’Antino.

Provenance: Late director Martin Dessau. Bruun Rasmussen auction 671, 1999 no. 660, reproduced p. 153 and auction 1233, 2012 no. 49.

Condition: A few minor peelings and retouches. In need of a light surface cleaning and a slight tightening.
