The dark blue field of this Kuba is covered in a self-contained diamond lattice of bold white lines decorated with tiny red diamonds. Unlike most other Caucasian rugs presenting lattice designs, the one seen here has not been conceived as an endless repeat extending beyond the boundaries of the field. Here the stars, Talish rosettes, blossoms and other small motifs enclosed within the diamonds recede into the background, and the graphic elements appear more dominant than the colours. The archaic appearance of the devices in the wide, white main border – probably geometric, abstract animal figures – are another rare feature. – Very well preserved except for minimal repiled sections in the field, original finishes all around. The upper and lower left corners lack the tied-off warp ends.
