LARGE CARVED MIRROR Late Baroque, Germany or Austria, first half of the 18th century
LARGE CARVED MIRROR
Late Baroque, Germany or Austria, first half of the 18th century
Wood richly carved, partly pierced, and gilt. The shaped rectangular frame moulded and richly decorated with rose scrolls, rocailles and foliage. Later modern mirror glass.
152 × 124 cm.
Minor losses to the paintwork and gilding. Cracks. Gilding partly retouched.
This richly and boldly carved frame is reminiscent in form and design of a carved wooden goldsmith’s model for the frame of the miraculous image at Sonntagberg (Lower Austria), created by Melchior Hefele (1716–1799) and now in the Kunstgewerbemuseum Berlin-Charlottenburg (illustrated in Claus Grimm, "Alte Bilderrahmen", Munich 1986, p. 150).
